Elon Musk asked his followers on Twitter on Sunday whether he should stand down as the company’s CEO after adopting a historic policy change earlier in the day. He posed the question, “Should I resign as CEO of Twitter?” and said that he would “abide by the findings of this poll.” With more than 2 million votes cast as of the time this article was written, the “Yes” option is in the lead. Around 6 AM ET, the poll will come to an end. Musk stated in a previous tweet that any future policy changes considered by Twitter would be put to a vote by the general public. “I apologise. won’t occur once more, “said him.

The vote follows Twitter’s announcement earlier in the day of a significant rule change that effectively forbids users from linking to rival websites like as Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, and Donald Trump’s Truth Social. Twitter announced that it would remove tweets that contain links to those websites under its new “Promotion of alternative social networks” policy. Additionally, it cautioned users against attempting to circumvent the prohibition and stated that persistent offenders might face permanent suspensions. After Paul Graham, the founder of Y Combinator and an early supporter of Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, voiced his displeasure with the policy and advised his followers to find him on Mastodon, the business briefly suspended Graham’s account over the course of a few hours.

It’s important to remember that Musk has previously stated his intention to let someone else handle Twitter’s daily operations. In reality, he swore under oath to make that promise. He stated in front of a court last month, “I honestly don’t want to be the CEO of any company.” While a popular vote won’t alter that, it might wound his ego. Additionally, Musk left out in his tweet the reality that he is under strong pressure from Tesla shareholders to turn back to the automaker. Tesla’s stock price has dramatically decreased after Musk took control of Twitter at the end of October. It decreased by 22% just in December. Due to all of this, some of Musk’s most fervent followers are now opposed to the billionaire.
